Well, if you just bought a new car, relocated to a new state, or updated your plate aesthetics to support your favorite local sports team, you might have some old license plates laying around collecting dust.

❶ Art and Décor

License plates just look cool. They can add flare to any space, making them perfect for decorating recreational rooms, basements, man caves, garages, work sheds, boy’s rooms, gyms, and much more. Line them up side by side and use them as a border to a room, or cover an entire wall to create a fun and unique focal point for your home or office. You can also create several other types of arts and crafts with old license plates; just be creative! And if you are experienced at metal work, you can smelt and weld your old plates into something truly new and distinctive.

❷ Collectors’ Items and Antiques

If you are really lucky, you have some very old license plates that are considered to be vintage items and worth a lot of money. If you have license plates that are rare, old, or commemorative, you may be able to sell them to a collector for a pleasant sum. But be careful; what may seem like a plate that has high economic value may just be a dud, while one that seems like a dud is actually worth more than the truck sitting in your driveway! To be sure, have your old license plates evaluated by a certified antiques dealer or curator. They can tell you the true expected value of your old plates.

❸ Scrap Metal Recycling

The best way to put old license plates to good use is to contribute to the preservation of our natural resources, as well as, the reduction of harmful emissions and invasive mining. How can you possibly accomplish all this with just some old metal license plates? Simply recycle them! Contact a local and trusted Indianapolis scrap metal recycling center to learn how to get started. The most reputable companies will even pay you cash for your scrap metal! So not only can you help the Earth and all of its living organisms, you can make a good chunk of money at the same time!

Here’s the Encouragement You Need to Start Recycling Aluminum Cans!

When it comes to adopting a recycling program, whether at home or in the office, one of the easiest places to start is with aluminum cans. Aluminum cans are everywhere! Not only are they common in both homes and commercial settings, they tend to get tossed in the garbage on a daily basis. This is most unfortunate since it takes more energy to mine and produce aluminum than any other metal.

If you are ready to do your part in preventing such unnecessary waste, start recycling aluminum cans with these great tips!

Where to Find Aluminum

There are several types of cans made from aluminum metal. The ones you are likely to have laying around include soup cans, vegetable cans, cans of pet food, and the ever-so-popular soda cans. Over 200 billion cans are produced each year and bought in large quantities all over the nation. However, only two-thirds of that number are recycled. As mentioned, it takes more energy to mine and produce aluminum than any other metal, making its preservation critical to preserving our natural resources and abating harmful emissions that pollute our air, land, and water.

Although it seems so simple to just recycle, thousands of Americans are accustomed to throwing garbage in the garbage. But it is important to understand that aluminum cans are not trash; they are valuable treasure that can be melted down, reprocessed, and repurposed over and over again. This saves an abundant amount of energy each year and reduces the need to mine raw bauxite ore. It even reduces air pollution!

How to Recycling Aluminum

If you want to join the initiative of preserving our Earth’s natural resources by recycling metal, start with aluminum since it is the most available and prevalent. Whether at home or the office, designate a separate receptacle or box for recyclable cans. Be sure to label it for aluminum only, or notify your family that the receptacle if for only aluminum. Once this area is assigned and labeled, it is a great help to pass out a flyer at work to further notify and promote the aluminum recycling initiative. Include where the receptacle is located and what days it is picked up.

As for home, start at the beginning of the month and collect all aluminum cans and items you use or find on a daily basis. Sodas, soup, foil, and more are all recyclable aluminum items. Collect these items all month long, then take your bulk collection to a local drop-off station or recycling company. Some even pay cash by the pound! One pound equals out to about 32 cans. The amount of money paid for aluminum cans depends on current market prices for metal. To be sure a can is made from aluminum, place a magnet on it. If it sticks, it is most likely steel. If it doesn’t stick, you’re in business!

Top 4 Signs You Need a New Refrigerator

Appliances are not built to last forever. At some point in your life, you will likely be faced with the task of replacing one or more of your most important appliances. This includes your refrigerator. As something we use on a daily basis, it doesn’t often cross our minds to have the refrigerator serviced or inspected for problems. Most often, we do not know the fridge is malfunctioning until it starts acting up. When your refrigerator starts showing certain signs, you know it is time to replace it with a new one.

Continue reading to learn the most common signs that suggest you need a new fridge, as well as, what you can do with your old one.

There are many ways a refrigerator can start to show signs of trouble. Distinguishing between a little needed repair and a full-out replacement is in the details. Here are the most common signs that suggest a refrigerator is far past the point of repair:

Excessive Moisture

If your refrigerator is developing condensation or frost, it could be a sign that the rubber sealing and gasket are defective. Condensation can be on the exterior or interior of the refrigerator. And although in minor cases, these two issues can be resolved, when these parts start to deteriorate, it is usually a sign of old age or extreme wear and tear. At this point, replacement would be most cost-effective.

Non-Stop Motor

The refrigerator motor runs at all times to regulate temperatures at all times; however, the motor should not be constantly operating at maximum speed. If you notice that the refrigerator motor is always working in overtime, or it is just very loud, it could be a sign that it is about to give out for good.Keep in mind that a very quiet motor is also a bad sign, and should be looked into.

Hot Surface

Although a little bit of heat coming from the fridge is normal, anything hotter is a bad sign. This could easily be the result of a constantly running motor, as mentioned above. Sometimes this is a sign that the ventilation coils have gone bad and need replaced, while other times, it is a sign of a much larger underlying problem.

Spoiled Food

When your food seems to go bad before the expiration date, or everything is too warm, it is a common indication that your refrigerator is just wearing down. If the refrigerator climate is not 40 degrees or cooler, you may need to adjust the temperature settings. But if the knob is in the right place, it is likely that the fridge is just old and needs to be replaced.

What You Can Do With a Broken Frige

Don’t be too discouraged if your refrigerator takes a turn for the worst. Regardless of its age or condition, you can still turn it into a profit. A local Indianapolis scrap metal recycling company will pay cash on the spot for scrap metal, or any commodities with large quantities of metal in them, including appliances. You can make a quick profit from an old piece of junk, and put that money toward your new refrigerator!

Do Junk Cars Contain Precious Metal?

If you have a junk car or two on your hands, the fastest way to turn a profit is to sell them directly to a junk car buyer. They will pay you a fair price for your vehicles because they want the metal inside them. Vehicles contain all sorts of metal, both ferrous and nonferrous kinds. But what many people do not realize is that junked cars also contain various traces of precious metals.

Continue reading to learn which precious metals are found in junk cars so you know what to expect when you are given an offer for your vehicle.

Catalytic Converters

The two most abundant precious metals found in a vehicle are gold and platinum. However, there are a few others in trace quantities. A vehicle that still retains a catalytic converter is more valuable than one that does not because catalytic converters are primarily compounded of platinum. It also contains traces of other precious metals and valuable alloys, such as palladium, rhodium, cerium, manganese, and nickel. As for gold, you can find it in any vehicle that contains a computer or circuit board.

Automotive Computers

Any vehicle that has an onboard computer system that controls engine and other functions, it also contains printed circuit boards. Circuit boards are valuable to junk car buyers because they retain gold-plated contact “fingers” at the ends where the connectors slide on. These types of computers, called powertrain control module (PCM) or engine control unit (ECU), monitors a vehicle’s engine functions, such as anti-lock brakes (ABS), transmission shifting, fuel injection, ignition timing, emission controls, and more.

Electronic Devices

Other components of a junk car that may contain precious metal are electronic. Electronics systems that contain circuit boards include GPS navigation, stereo systems, CD changers, electronic displays, screens, and more. With a few simple hand tools and years of experience, these circuit boards can be removed in a short amount of time.

Budget

Know your budget. Deciding your personal spending limit is the first step to finding a phone that fits your needs and wants. By setting your budget early on in the process, you can better decide on a phone, plan, and provider by not having to go back and forth with price. With a budget in mind, you can narrow your possibilities, making it an easier decision.

Phone Provider

The phone provider is the company that will provide the cellular service for your phone. Popular providers include AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, Virgin Mobile, and Boost Mobile. By choosing a provider, you can further narrow your choices when it comes to picking a phone plan; which is next on the list. Be sure to choose a reliable phone provider, such as the ones just mentioned above. You do not want to get stuck in a long contract with a lousy cell phone company.

Phone Plan

Your phone plan is the type of calling, texting, and internet capabilities you pay for. It is important for you to decide what exactly you need from a cell phone, and pick a plan that best represents those needs and wants. Gaming, SMS, instant messenger, internet, blue tooth, long-distance calling, and more are all possible choices and options for phone plans.

If you are using your cell phone for business purposes, you might want to lean toward a phone with reliable internet browsing and connection services, calendars, and out-of-state calling options. If you are looking for a personal-use phone, you might still want internet capabilities, but games, apps, and calling conveniences as well. Your internet provider customer service representatives will gladly discuss these plan options and match you to the one that fits your needs best.

Phone Features

When it comes to choosing an actual cell phone, you will have the best luck by deciding which phone features are most important to you. For example, features include alarm clocks, calculators, weather, news, calendars, cameras, video recorders, voice recorders, maps, and more. Many phones come all-inclusive with many of these features; however, most other features and applications must be purchased separately. Keep your budget in mind and take into consideration to applications and features you want to add on.

Options for Your Old Phone

A used cell phone is generally worth some cash. Depending on the make, model, and condition of the device or phone, you can get anywhere from 5 to 100 dollars, and sometimes more. It all depends on several factors, including the terms of the vendor, the condition of the device, the degree of valuable metal it contains, and more. Even if your old phone is broken or destroyed, it can still bring you a notable profit. Regardless of condition, you can sell your old cell phone to an Indianapolis scrap metal buyer who recycles electronics. Even tablets, computers, laptops, drones, MP3 players, iPods, and similar electronic devices will sell for cash.

Flushing a Radiator

One of the most important things to remember about performing any factory scheduled maintenance for your car or truck, is to always be sure the engine is turned off and cooled down all the way. Once you have done this, you can go ahead and start on the rest of the process.

Here’s what you will need to flush a car radiator:

Coolant
Radiator Flushing Solution
Coolant Receptacle or Bucket
Cloth Rag or Towel
Funnel
Phillips Head Screw Driver

You can never be reminded enough to be sure your engine is turned off and cooled down before working on your radiator. Once you have all your tools and supplies gathered, and the engine is cool of course, you can go ahead and place your receptacle or bucket beneath the drain plug of the radiator.

Next, remove the drain plug with your screw driver, if it needs one, and let the old coolant flow out. Now you are ready to re-attach the drain plug and remove the upper radiator cap. Pour in the flushing solution, fill the rest with water to the top, and re-apply the radiator cap. Now you want to turn your engine on, and your heat at the highest setting, and let it run until the engine reaches its normal operating temperature.

Once it reaches this temperature, turn the ignition off and let the engine cool completely again. Now, place the coolant receptacle or bucket below the drain plug and remove the drain plug, releasing all the leftover radiator flush solution. Screw the drain plug back on, remove the radiator cap once again, and use the funnel to pour in the coolant this time. Re-attach the cap and you are all set!

Why Does the Price of Scrap Metal Fluctuate?

Scrap Metal Buyers 317-247-8484

Scrap Metal Buyers 317-247-8484

Because there are so many types of metal, and they all retain purposeful qualities, metal is a widely consumed and desired commodity. The infinite uses of metal causes their demand to increase, and their prices to rise and fall, and change on a regular basis. There are also principle reasons why the price of certain metals fluctuate from time to time. And now that scrap metal is a known valuable commodity, it too has experienced variations in worth and demand.

Continue reading to learn what influences the prices of metal, and what metals are worth the most money in today’s economy.

Prices Tags for Metal

Some of the most vital and economy-changing commodities are made from ferrous and nonferrous metals; like ships, airplanes, spaceships, vehicles, and more. These commodities alone can make metal worth their current and past price tags. Even discarded and used metals are now widely sought-after and retain monetary value. Not only does this better protect our natural environments by reducing waste, it provides alternatives for those in need of metal at a lower price tag.

One of the largest influences on the price of metal are companies and business, both domestic and international. Because scrap metal has become a significant source of revenue for many businesses all over the world, the prices for them have risen drastically in the past decade. It is a simple example of supply and demand.

Another major influence on the price of scrap metal has to do with non-availability of certain metals, depletion of certain metals, labor costs, reduced overseas mining efforts, and more. The scrap metal industry is growing at incredible speed because many metals, like aluminum, copper, and steel, can be recycled and reused over and over again. This allows many businesses to purchase good-quality metal products at a better price. It also reduces the need for over-mining across the globe.

Metals like copper and iron are high in demand, and less available in today’s mining economy. This makes the prices of scrap iron and copper higher than before. The same applies for the scrap aluminum metal. In basis economics, the higher the demand, the bigger the price tag.

Recycling scrap metal is extremely beneficial and important for our environment and our global economies. We can drastically reduce the need for mining when we simply recycle old metal items and pieces. Junk cars, automotive parts, old appliances, copper wiring, electronics, sheet metal, and more are all examples of commodities that retain significant sources of metal that we need. Consider recycling anything made from metal if you have no use for it any longer. You might even be able to make some fast cash by calling a local scrap metal recycling company!
