Vehicle Recovery Services, Anyone?

A teenage boy tells his father, “Dad, there is something wrong with the car. There’s water in the carburetor.”

His dad replies, “Water in the carburetor? That’s just ridiculous!”

But his son persists, saying “Dad, I’m telling you there is water in the carburetor!”

His dad starts to get a little nervous, and says, “You don’t even know what a carburetor is! But fine, I’ll come take a look. Where is the car?”

The son replies, “In the pool.”

How About Some Roadside Assistance?

A man gets a flat tire, so he pulls over to the side of the road to check it out. After he gets out of his vehicle, he opens his trunk and retrieves two life-size cardboard cut-outs of a nude man in an open trench coat. He places the cardboard cut-outs at the rear of his vehicle, facing on-coming traffic. These cut-outs of men were so life-like you wouldn’t believe they weren’t real!

As he proceeds to put on his spare tire, he notices that traffic is slowing down to get a better look at his life-size cut outs, honking, shouting, and causing a commotion. This was of course backing up traffic and causing a huge distraction for other drivers. So a police officer pulls over to see what’s going on.

The officer asks the man, “What is going on here?” The man replies, “Just changing a flat tire, Sir.”

The policeman exclaims back, “So what are those obscene cardboard men doing out here on the side of the road?!”

The man replies back in shock, as if the officer should already know the answer, saying…

“Helloooooooo, those are my emergency flashers!”

Uh-OH! Traffic Clearance May Be in Order!

An old man was driving his Buick down the freeway when his cell phone rang. Upon answering, he heard his wife’s voice urgently warning him, “Herman, I just heard on the news that there’s a car going the wrong way on 280! Please be careful!”

Which Type of Trailer Hitch Do I Need to Tow a Small Fishing Boat With a Standard-Sized Car?

Indianapolis Towing and Recovery 317-247-8484

Indianapolis Towing and Recovery 317-247-8484

As summer comes to an abrupt end, people scramble to indulge in all the outdoor activities they can before colder weather is upon us. And one of the most popular outdoor activities there is to enjoy here in Indiana is fishing! Fishing is a common activity because it is inexpensive, family-friendly, and easy for people of all ages to do. But mostly, people go fishing because it’s just fun!

Whether you are aiming for catfish, blue gill, or bass, Hoosiers know you get the best results fishing on a boat. In order to get your fishing boat to your lake or river of choice, you must have the proper towing system for your car. Continue reading to learn the recommended hitch set-up for towing a fishing boat with a small to mid-sized car.

Towing a Trailer

A fishing boat and trailer combined will usually have a gross trailer weight (GTW) under two tons. So to safely (and legally) tow a loaded trailer weighing up to 2,000 pounds, you need 5 primary components. This includes a trailer hitch receiver, a ball mount, a hitch ball, a pin and clip, and a wiring harness. The hitch receiver is the part that attaches to your car’s bumper and accepts the removable ball mount. It comes as an open-faced receiver or fixed tongue model. The ball mount, also called a “drawbar”, inserts into the trailer hitch receiver’s frontward-facing opening, proving a platform for mounting the hitch ball. The pin and clip holds the ball mount inside the trailer hitch receiver, while the wiring harness provides power and synchronizes signals to the trailer’s lights.

Choosing a Hitch

Below is a guide to which hitch-type you will need to tow a small fishing boat with a compact or mid-sized car depending on the length of your towing trailer.

HITCH TYPE = Regular Duty
HITCH CLASS = Class 1
GTW = Up to 2,000 lbs.
TONGUE WEIGHT = 200 lbs.
TRANSMISSION COOLER = Light Duty

For trailers up to 6 feet: Class 1 Fixed Tongue
For trailers up to 14 feet: Class 1 Receiver Hitch

Additional Towing Accessories

Wiring harnesses are required by law, so be sure to never skip this step. And although not necessary to actually tow a trailer, safety chains are also strongly encouraged and should always be used. You might also consider adding on an aftermarket transmission cooler to help your car maintain safe operating temperatures while towing a load. These are especially useful in hot climates. Sometimes, factory transmission coolers are inadequate for certain towing applications.

How to Become a Tow Truck Operator

Indianapolis Towing and Recovery 317-247-8484

Indianapolis Towing and Recovery 317-247-8484

We need to be thankful for tow truck operators. Without their services, there would be a long list of inconveniences and consequences. Tow trucks can provide towing services for stranded vehicles, as well as, illegally parked vehicles. But they also do so much more! When a big tree falls after a big storm and blocks the road, they can clear the way for traffic. If a bus falls into a ditch or pond, they can pull it out. When an airplane needs to be transported, they are the ones for the job. And when someone has a flat tire or locks their keys in the car, they are there too.

So you see, there is more to being a tow truck driver than most would think. In fact, it is a great job for someone who likes to work alone and loves to drive! Not only does it give you an annual income of 25 to 35 thousand dollars, it gives you freedom to work nights, holidays, weekends, and more. Being a tow truck operator is not only a professional job, it is an exciting one. You never know what challenge lays ahead of you day-day-to-day! So if you are considering the idea of becoming a tow truck driver, continue reading to find out how!

Truck Driver Requirements

In order to become a tow truck operator, you must meet certain requirements first. These prerequisites will vary among local jurisdictions, but nonetheless, it is important to be prepared to have them all. For starters, you must be at least 18 years old to become a tow truck driver. You must also have a valid drivers’ license. So if you do not have one already, that will be your first step toward becoming a wrecker operator.

Your driving history will most likely play a role in whether or not you get hired within a towing company. In terms of driving records, there shouldn’t be a need to worry if you only have minor infractions like a speeding ticket or unpaid parking tickets. It is understandable that a towing company wants to hire someone they think is a safe driver.

If you are 18 years old, legally licensed to drive, and retain a decent driving record, then you are ready to get your CDL. This stands for “commercial drivers’ license.” This is a secondary licensed in addition to your primary drivers’ license, and permits you to operate commercial vehicles. This is not always a requirement among towing companies, or local jurisdictions, but it is a wise choice for anyone wishing to join the driving field.

It shows that you took the time to complete a series of accredited training courses to improve your driving skills. This alone increases your chances of being hired at a wrecker company. Also, the U.S. Department of Transportation requires you to have a CDL to operate extra-large trucks and cargoes over 26,000 pounds. So it’s best to go for it! To get self-certified for a CDL in Indiana, click here.

Towing companies will also want to hire those in good physical health, including vision and hearing. Many request a signature from a licensed physician declaring your status of health. And you should expect to have to pass a drug test too.

The last step toward becoming a tow truck driver is to create your resume. Be honest and informative by providing your credentials, past education, work force experience, and goals. Once you do this, you can start applying!

Gooseneck Hitches Versus Fifth Wheel Hitches

Indianapolis Towing and Recovery 317-247-8484

Indianapolis Towing and Recovery 317-247-8484

Sure, you can get by using a Class 1 through 5 receiver for your trailer and light boat towing. But for large loads, horse trailers, and campers, you need a heavy duty hitch. Heavy duty hitches, combined with the proper towing equipment, allow drivers to tow larger freights and pull heavier loads, for a longer amount of time. This is made possible by placing the hitching point in the truck bed over the rear axle. They are strong enough to support more weight compared to a standard bumper hitch.

So overall, they make large towing jobs safer and more efficient. Continue reading to learn the two types of heavy-duty hitch systems, and the difference between them.

Heavy Duty Towing Hitches

There are two kinds of towing hitches used for heavy-duty purposes: 1) gooseneck hitches, and 2) fifth wheel hitches. They both used a different coupler, but there is more that sets them apart than just that. Look below to review some details about each hitch, and how they support heavy-duty tows.

Gooseneck Hitches

These hitches have trailer balls that are similar to standard hitches. However, the trailer ball is mounted in the middle of the truck bed instead of the bumper. Gooseneck hitches can support much more weight, and can carry large recreational vehicles, campers, trailers, and more. In fact, it can support and pull up to 30,000 pounds gross tongue weight (GTW)!

They can also make tighter and narrower turns since their pivot point is more forward. Gooseneck hitches are generally used for trucks with 4-wheel axles in order to sustain the weight. And certain gooseneck hitches can be folded down or easily removed so drivers can have access to their truck bed when they are not towing anything.

Recommended: B&W Turnover Ball Gooseneck Hitch – $439.00

Fifth Wheel Hitches

These heavy duty hitches look much like the ones used on semi-trucks. They are also similar to gooseneck hitches because they also can support and pull a large amount of weight. In fact, they have a high weight capacity of 16,000 to 30,000 pounds GTW. This is because they too have a bed-mounted design. They mount to rails that must be permanently bolted on a truck bed, but can be removed for truck bed access. If you are pulling big campers or vehicle trailers, you will be safer and happier with a fifth wheel hitch. They are easier to maneuver and much more stable for towing heavy loads. Many fifth wheel hitches have a special pivoting design that allows for better shock absorption for bumps and changing road conditions. This gives drivers a smoother towing experience.

Recommended: B&W Companion Fifth Wheel Hitch – $879.00

3 Reasons Why Car Auctions Save You Money

Indianapolis Auto Auctions 317-247-8484

Indianapolis Auto Auctions 317-247-8484

If you need a replacement vehicle fast, but money is tight, a car auction could be the perfect solution to your dilemma. Local auto auctions are the best source for finding a good-quality vehicle, below market prices. In fact, brand new model vehicles can go for as much as $10,000 less than its KKB value, simply because they are auctioned off, rather than sold. You see, at an auto auction, cars are priced extremely low, at base rates. Then once the auction begins, it is up to the consumers to decide how much the vehicle is worth, and how much it sells for. The highest bidder always wins.

For example, a 2005 Chevy Cobalt might start at $2,000, but after a few rounds of bidding back and forth, it sells to the highest bidder for $4,400. Although the price goes up, it is all based on real-time demand. And if no one bids, you get the base asking price! That is the first reason why car auctions save you money. Continue reading to learn the other two!

Auto Auctions are Local

Since vehicles are local and not imported in town from another location, their prices are not inflated to make up for the overhead transportation costs. Dealership vehicles automatically tack on extra dollars for many reasons, and importing is one of them. Skip all the extra costs for things that had nothing to do with you, and choose an auto auction for new and used vehicles. Also, local vehicles are an advantage since you are familiar with the terrain and weather they likely experienced. You wouldn’t want to buy a 4×4 truck from a man in the smoky mountains, since the conditions it experienced on a daily basis were probably harsh and had long-term effects on it. Knowing where your car comes from is an advantage because you know that it was driven locally. This saves you money by ensuring you are buying a quality car in good condition.

Auto Auctions Don’t Pay Staff Commissions

Another reason why dealership prices are so ridiculous is because they must also pay their employees commission. This means negotiating back and forth, which is enough of a hassle, and then paying extra because a salesman wants to profit more from your purchase. A car auction has auctioneers, not car salesmen, and they surely do not work for commission. You are getting a transparent price, with no hidden agendas, when you buy a vehicle from an auto auction.

What Do I Do if I Get a Flat Tire?

Flat Tire Service 317-247-8484

Flat Tire Service 317-247-8484

Especially among younger and experienced drivers, knowing what to do when your tire goes flat is not common knowledge. This becomes even truer as technologies and amenities continue to innovate and expand. So it is perfectly normal to not know how to handle a flat tire, especially if it’s your first one. Fortunately, you have several options to choose from if you ever get a flat. Continue reading to learn what these options are, and what you should do if you are ever inconvenienced with a flat tire.

Pull Over Safely

As soon as a tire goes flat while driving, it can startle the driver. Sometimes it blows, making a huge popping noise, while other times it can flap along as you drive, making navigation more difficult. So if it ever happens to you, be sure to stay calm and pull over slowly. Put your hazard lights on to indicate you are parked, and most importantly, watch out for moving traffic beside you before exiting the vehicle. Once you are safely and securely on the side of the road, you can decide what you want your next steps to be.

Option 1:

Change Your Own Tire

Roadside Assistance Service 317-247-8484

Roadside Assistance Service 317-247-8484

If you are someone that feels confident in changing your own tire, then start by looking for your vehicle’s spare. Typically, spares are located under the trunk bed, but in some models, they are located in other areas. The owners’ manual will tell you where to look if you can’t find it on your own.

It is easy to learn how to change a tire for small to mid-sized cars, and you can look up instructional videos on your phone or tablet. You may be able to refer to your owners’ manual for instructions as well. If you have never changed a tire before and you don’t have access to instructions, do not attempt it and move on to the other options. Also, if you have a large vehicle or truck, and you are inexperienced in tire changing, don’t start now! Just move onto another option.

Option 2:

Roadside Assistance

There are several roadside assistance companies that provide prompt and affordable flat tire services for all make and model vehicles in their area. If you choose to call a local roadside assistance company, they will generally take down necessary information and be on the scene within a few minutes. It is common for it to take up to an hour during busier times. These companies offer a wide range of services aside from flat tire assistance. They also offer fuel fill-ups, lockout services, dead batteries, and towing. Some auto insurance plans come with roadside assistance, so you would simply call the affiliated company for help. Roadside assistance services are affordable, safe, and fast.

Drivers Beware of Common Towing Mistakes

Indianapolis Towing and Recovery 317-247-8484

Indianapolis Towing and Recovery 317-247-8484

No matter what type of tow you have planned, it is vital to beware of the most common towing mistakes made, and how to avoid them at all costs. Road trippers, RV owners, trailer hitchers, and more should all be well-versed in towing regulations, laws, and practices.

Continue reading to learn the most common towing mistakes seen on the road, and how to properly navigate around potential towing problems and more.

Failure to Know Tow Ratings

Each vehicle has a certain towing capacity and limit. Depending on the make, model, and towing accessories you own, your vehicle’s towing ability will differ from others. Overloading your car or truck is a very dangerous situation because it can lead to serious problems; such as brake failure, overheating transmission, lost trailer connections, broken hitches, busted suspension, and much more. These circumstances can lead to serious and even fatal motor vehicle accidents. The responsible tower always knows his or her tow ratings. These ratings will allow you to determine if your hitch system matches your vehicle’s towing specs. All numbers must be checked, double checked, and entirely complied with at all times. Look at the vehicle’s owners’ manual, inside the driver’s side door, or online for these specifications and towing guidelines.

Failure to Acknowledge Local Towing Regulations

Towing laws, regulations, and restrictions differ state to state; so before leaving on your next road trip, be sure to research the towing laws for each state you intend to pass through. Otherwise, you can expect to get pulled over and issued a ticket. Things like towing speeds, trailer lights, safety chains, and braking equipment are regulations known to exist in certain states.

Improper Cargo Loading

Improperly loading your cargo you intend to tow is a very dangerous situation for yourself, your passengers, other drivers, pedestrians, your vehicle, and much more. This situation can lead to a load of chaos. An off-balance trailer is almost impossible to navigate and control. This puts other drivers, vehicles, and property at risk of a collision. Cargo must be loaded properly, and weight-distribution needs to be even at all times.

Forgetting Trailer Insurance

One big mistake many novice towers make is failing to purchase proper insurance coverage for their trailer. If your vehicle is insured, it doesn’t mean that your trailer is, so it is important to contact your insurance provider to see if you have adequate insurance coverage for your tow. All you really need is basic liability coverage for a trailer; a very affordable policy.

6 Spare Tire Facts You Need to Know

Flat Tire Service 317-247-8484

Flat Tire Service 317-247-8484

Being the responsible driver and vehicle owner that you are, you are sure to renew your license plate when necessary, pay your insurance on time, maintain a valid drivers’ license, stay on top of all scheduled maintenance, go the speed limit (most of the time anyway), and wear your seat belt. There is not much you’ve missed over the years in terms of driver/vehicle responsibility.

But there is one way you can kick it up a notch: Learn important and relative information about your vehicle’s spare tires! Your spare tires are a very important and beneficial component to you and your vehicle, but they tend to go unnoticed until they are needed. So simply review some facts about spare tires and be better prepared the next time you get a flat. Now, continue reading if you wish to increase your driving knowledge!

Spare Tires are Not For Permanent Use

Factory direct spare tires are not the same as conventional tires. They are smaller, lighter, and more compact, making them more vulnerable than standard vehicle tires. For this reason, spare tires are not manufactured nor intended to be a permanent replacement for regular tires. Check your owners’ manual for details about your vehicle’s tire specs. And always have a spare tire swapped out for a standard one as soon as possible.

Additionally, it is important to note that replacement spare tires are full size tires. Although they are narrower and more compact, they are still the same diameter as your vehicle’s standard issued tires. This ensures driving maintains stable and even. On the other hand, there are some replacement spare tires that are not the same size as standard ones. It all depends on the brand and model.

Smaller Spare Tires are Limited Use Tires

Smaller or compact spares, popularly known as “donuts”, are limited-use tires. This means they are not manufactured to provide the same benefits and performance levels as regular tires. Compact spare tires are meant emergency tire replacement and short travel. They are supposed to safely get you to the nearest tire shop as soon as possible, not replace your old tire entirely.

Driving on a Spare Can Reduce Miles Per Gallon (MPG)

Your vehicle’s MPG can be negatively affected if you drive on a spare tire for a prolonged distance or period of time. This applies whether it’s a full size spare or a compact. It is recommended to use the lightest option spare tire for your vehicle to avoid dragging around more than you need.

Not All Vehicles Need Spare Tires Anymore

With the new tubeless tire technology entering the market, many newer model vehicles are not even equipped with a factory direct spare tire because they don’t need it. Tubeless tires do not “go flat” in the conventional sense, making them drivable for longer after taking on sudden damage or stress. This is one technology that has influenced the next fact.

Many Spare Tires are Becoming Obsolete

Not all spare tires that once were, are still today. There are several spare tire brands and models that are not manufactured anymore. So older vehicles may come with an outdated folding spare tire, or another type that is not available on the market any longer. Also, the future of spare tires may be bleak with the new and on-going advancements in tire technology.

Spare Tires Still Need Proper Tire Pressure

Even though spare tires are not our vehicle’s “real” tires, they still need to maintain proper inflation, which means the tire pressure needs checked every so often. You can use any standard tire pressure gauge to accomplish this.

Consider a Roadside Assistance Company for Safe Driving in Indianapolis

Roadside Assistance Service 317-247-8484

Roadside Assistance 317-247-8484

Safe driving is a must, and considering a roadside assistance company to have your back while on the road is a very smart choice. If you find yourself on the side of the road with a flat tire, they can help with that. If you are stuck in a muddy ditch, they can help with that too! Even if you lock your keys in your car, some even have technology that can unlock car doors from miles away! Roadside assistance companies vary in terms of the services they offer and the technologies they use to provide their services. Basically, there are many options out there when choosing a roadside assistance team.

Third Party Roadside Assistance Programs

Depending on the amount of roadside assistance you think you might need, and the situations you feel are most common and likely to happen to you, are the primary deciding factors in adopting a roadside assistance program. If you are a mother or father of young drivers, perhaps you would want a consistent program that you and your family can rely on, no matter what time of day or night. This type of roadside assistance is a bit more costly, like OnStar and AAA. They assist you with many problems, and can instruct you on what to do if your car has just been towed, if it breaks down or has a flat tire, if you’re locked out, if you are out of gas, and much more

Professional Towing Company

Another roadside rescue option would be calling a professional tow company. There are many Indianapolis towing companies that work around the clock, 24/7, to help people who are locked out of their cars, have flat tires, need pulled out of snow embankments, and more. Their services are usually al-a-carte and much cheaper than corporate roadside assistance companies like AAA and OnStar. This is a great option for mature and experienced drivers that may only need roadside assistance every once in a while. This way, the driver isn’t wasting money paying monthly fees to a big company when they hardly need to utilize the actual service. A professional towing company charges only when the service is requested and provided.

Not a lot of people realize that some professional tow companies in Indianapolis provide roadside assistance in addition to towing and recovery. But not all companies are alike. It is important to choose a company that has a long-standing god reputation in the Indianapolis communities, and has been in business for a long time. This ensures you are doing business with a reputable and well-established company that is still around because of their integrity and quality of service.
