Tips for First-Time Auto Auction Attendees

Indianapolis Auto Auctions 317-247-8484

Indianapolis Auto Auctions 317-247-8484

One of the most cost-effective resources for local car buying are public auto auctions. Whether you are looking for a vehicle to provide spare parts, or limited by a strict budget, car auctions guarantee bargain prices and instantaneous gratification. But if you have never attended an auto auction before, you need to prepare yourself with some pertinent auto auction car buying knowledge about if you wish to give it a try. Continue reading for some first time auto auction tips that may help you get the deal of a lifetime.

Getting Started is Easy!

Many people are threatened by the word, “auction”, because it is often associated with fast talking, unclear buying terms, and a competitive market. But local auto auctions are not exactly what you see on television and in the movies; it is actually easy to place a bid in a local auto auction. Easier than you think! All you need is the right knowledge to place a successful bid you won’t regret. Look below for the tips you need to do just that!

🚗 Set a Budget and Stick to It

When it comes to auto auctions, the most important tips is to set a budget that is realistic and effective for you, and then stick to that budget no matter what opportunities or prices you encounter on the bidding grounds. Also keep in mind that there are additional costs on top of the vehicle’s selling price, such as an auction fee, prep fee, and taxes; so be sure to add these into your budget before you attend the auction.

🚗 Check With Your Bank About Financing Options

If you are eligible for a cash or car loan, and you can afford to take on new debt, you may want to check with your bank about your particular options. By adding to your budget, you can get a better quality car, which means a higher quality investment. See if you can get pre-approved before attending an auction.

🚗 Inspect the Inventory

It is important to look at each individual vehicle before placing any bids. Pay close attention to small mechanical details, like power windows, seat warmers, lights, and air conditioning. Be sure to make yourself fully aware of their engine and performance conditions. It is recommended to even bring a mechanic with you during this process. And do not hesitate to run a Carfax® report on the spot for any vehicle of interest.

🚗 Get Yourself Registered

Upon a moderate registration fee, many auctions permit pre-bidding before the auction actually begins. This helps to get the “cream of the crop” before the rest of the public is allowed in to bid. Registration terms and fees vary among auctions, but registering simply requires filling out a card.

🚗 Controlling Your Bids

Since you’ve set a budget, you know when to stop raising your card as the auctioneer gushes out prices. Continue raising your card for the vehicle you want, and then stop once the auctioneer hits your limit. If you win within your budget, go to the cashier, pay, get your receipt, and then show your receipt to the parking lot staff who will let you drive off in your new vehicle!

Does My Used Cell Phone Have Any Cash Value?

Metal Recycling Services 317-247-8484

Metal Recycling Services 317-247-8484

Every few weeks it seems like a newer, faster version of your phone makes a debut. Just keeping up with the newest and latest cell phone models can be frustrating on the wallet and the nerves. Although there is nothing anyone can really do about new cell phone releases; it might not be so bad collecting every make and model you like. The truth is that your older model phones may have some value after all! Continue reading to learn about the value of your current, used, or old cell phone and the values of other mobile devices as well.

Recycle Old Cell Phones for Cash

A secret that is beginning to come to light is the fact that cell phones can be recycled; and many scrap metal recycling companies pay cash for new or used electronic devices. On top of cell phones, these companies generally accept other forms of electronic devices, including modems, PDA’s, tablets, pagers, cameras, lap tops, gaming devices, GPS systems, electrical wiring, circuit boards, and much more.

There are several components within a standard cellular phone that can be recycled and reused. For example, cell phones contain various metals that can and should be recycled. These components can then be used in repairing or refurbishing existing phones, or melted down and used as something entirely different.

Other than doing something good for the environment, a used cell phone is generally worth some cash too. Depending on the make, model, and condition of the device or phone, you can get anywhere from 5 to 100 dollars, and sometimes more. It all depends on several factors, including the terms of the vendor, the condition of the device, the degree of valuable metal it contains, and more.

4 Reasons to Buy a Rebuilt Engine

Metal Recycling Services 317-247-8484

Metal Recycling Services 317-247-8484

If your car is in need of an engine, don’t even think about wasting your hard-earned money on a brand-new over-priced one! Instead, consider all the benefits of buying a remanufactured car engine. Rebuilt engines have so much to offer drivers in terms of convenience, dependability, and performance. Not only are they easy to come by, rebuilt engines are truly a great choice, and never a compromise. Continue reading to learn 4 reasons why!

Re-Manufactured Car Engines

Re-manufactured car engines are engines that have been taken apart, inspected, cleaned, refurbished, and put back together again. Depending on the condition of the engine, this process can also involve repairing or replacing certain parts before reassembling it. Using a rebuilt engine is known as “re-powering” and comes with various benefits. These benefits are directly related to the top four reasons why you should buy a remanufactured engine.

ONE: It’s Cheaper

Rebuilt engines are significantly cheaper than brand-new ones. You can save thousands of dollars by choosing to purchase a used rebuilt engine rather than a brand new engine. In fact, for the same price of a brand-new engine, you can buy a whole other car! Not only does the cost of rebuilt engines not reflect the intensive labor that went into rebuilding them, their performance and value are equal to brand new ones.

TWO: They Meet OEM Specifications

With the changing and innovative technology these days, rebuilt car engines are now able to meet the latest OEM (original equipment manufacturer) specifications. And since OEM specs have improved over the years, there is a strong chance that a rebuilt engine operates better and more efficiently than it did when it was brand-new!

THREE: They Come With Warranties

Many places that sell used OEM auto parts provide a 90-day warranty. That means that a rebuilt engine is covered by warranty for up to three months after you buy it! This kind of insurance puts drivers as ease, and protects them from “lemon-buying” scams.

FOUR: They are Good for the Environment

When engines are rebuilt, there is a reduced need to mine and manufacture steel. This reduces harmful factory pollution and emissions, as well as, preserves our natural resources and keeps landfills in control. Reusing and recycling is an important part of protecting our earth. Buying used auto parts is just one small way to contribute to that very effort!

Top 5 Reasons to Buy Used Auto Parts

Used Auto Parts 317-244-0700

Used Auto Parts 317-244-0700

Whether you are a car owner who is restoring a classic or repairing an everyday vehicle, buying used auto parts has several advantages. It can be difficult making the decision to buy brand new automotive parts when there is an alternative available that is equally effective. Although new parts have never been used, there is no guarantee that they will not cause problems down the line. The benefits of used auto parts makes them a worthwhile investment and provides peace of mind.

Continue reading to review the top 5 reasons why you should consider purchasing used auto parts instead of new ones, and who to call for the most dependable ones in town.

❶ Cost Savings

The most obvious and admired benefit of buying used auto parts is the cost-savings. Brand new auto parts are expensive, and often times you are only paying extra for the fact that they have never been used. Especially for older vehicles that require a vital part replacement, used auto parts is the more cost-effective option. There is no sense in purchasing a brand new part for a 19 year old car with over 200,000 miles on it. In this case, a used part would be perfect. But that does not mean that only old cars should have their parts replaced with used ones. The remaining reasons will reveal why used auto parts are also great for newer model vehicles and how they can save drivers thousands of dollars in comparison to dealer parts.

❷ Refurbishing

Many used auto parts are professionally refurbished for the specific purpose of resale. So this means that refurbished auto parts have been treated and tuned up, making them just as effective and valuable as a brand new part. Although refurbished auto parts are a bit pricier, they are still cheaper than buying new. They are worth the extra cost because they have been reconditioned and restored.

❸ Availability

There are several vendors of used auto parts, including junk yards, online sellers, auto auctions, auto parts store, and used parts dealers. This makes it very easy and convenient to find any used auto part you need for almost any make or model vehicle. Just be sure to choose a well-established, experienced company that has a good-standing reputation within the community. A company with these credentials is usually a trustworthy source for buying used auto parts.

❹ Eco-Friendly

Buying used auto parts is good for the environment. That is because it preserves our Earth’s natural resources since it reduces the need for mining new steel to manufacture more parts. Both mining and manufacturing can negatively affect our environment, so buying used parts helps contribute to the preservation of our surrounding eco-systems and natural resources.

❺ OEM Standards

These days, many used auto parts meet OEM standards, which stands for “original equipment manufacturer “standards. This means they are not parts that were made by third-party manufacturers, and instead, made by the original automaker. This ensures that the parts was made specifically for your make and model vehicle. OEM parts will be labeled as such, and sellers will advertise them that way.

How About Some Roadside Assistance?

A man gets a flat tire, so he pulls over to the side of the road to check it out. After he gets out of his vehicle, he opens his trunk and retrieves two life-size cardboard cut-outs of a nude man in an open trench coat. He places the cardboard cut-outs at the rear of his vehicle, facing on-coming traffic. These cut-outs of men were so life-like you wouldn’t believe they weren’t real!

As he proceeds to put on his spare tire, he notices that traffic is slowing down to get a better look at his life-size cut outs, honking, shouting, and causing a commotion. This was of course backing up traffic and causing a huge distraction for other drivers. So a police officer pulls over to see what’s going on.

The officer asks the man, “What is going on here?” The man replies, “Just changing a flat tire, Sir.”

The policeman exclaims back, “So what are those obscene cardboard men doing out here on the side of the road?!”

The man replies back in shock, as if the officer should already know the answer, saying…

“Helloooooooo, those are my emergency flashers!”

Which Type of Trailer Hitch Do I Need to Tow a Small Fishing Boat With a Standard-Sized Car?

Indianapolis Towing and Recovery 317-247-8484

Indianapolis Towing and Recovery 317-247-8484

As summer comes to an abrupt end, people scramble to indulge in all the outdoor activities they can before colder weather is upon us. And one of the most popular outdoor activities there is to enjoy here in Indiana is fishing! Fishing is a common activity because it is inexpensive, family-friendly, and easy for people of all ages to do. But mostly, people go fishing because it’s just fun!

Whether you are aiming for catfish, blue gill, or bass, Hoosiers know you get the best results fishing on a boat. In order to get your fishing boat to your lake or river of choice, you must have the proper towing system for your car. Continue reading to learn the recommended hitch set-up for towing a fishing boat with a small to mid-sized car.

Towing a Trailer

A fishing boat and trailer combined will usually have a gross trailer weight (GTW) under two tons. So to safely (and legally) tow a loaded trailer weighing up to 2,000 pounds, you need 5 primary components. This includes a trailer hitch receiver, a ball mount, a hitch ball, a pin and clip, and a wiring harness. The hitch receiver is the part that attaches to your car’s bumper and accepts the removable ball mount. It comes as an open-faced receiver or fixed tongue model. The ball mount, also called a “drawbar”, inserts into the trailer hitch receiver’s frontward-facing opening, proving a platform for mounting the hitch ball. The pin and clip holds the ball mount inside the trailer hitch receiver, while the wiring harness provides power and synchronizes signals to the trailer’s lights.

Choosing a Hitch

Below is a guide to which hitch-type you will need to tow a small fishing boat with a compact or mid-sized car depending on the length of your towing trailer.

HITCH TYPE = Regular Duty
HITCH CLASS = Class 1
GTW = Up to 2,000 lbs.
TONGUE WEIGHT = 200 lbs.
TRANSMISSION COOLER = Light Duty

For trailers up to 6 feet: Class 1 Fixed Tongue
For trailers up to 14 feet: Class 1 Receiver Hitch

Additional Towing Accessories

Wiring harnesses are required by law, so be sure to never skip this step. And although not necessary to actually tow a trailer, safety chains are also strongly encouraged and should always be used. You might also consider adding on an aftermarket transmission cooler to help your car maintain safe operating temperatures while towing a load. These are especially useful in hot climates. Sometimes, factory transmission coolers are inadequate for certain towing applications.

How to Become a Tow Truck Operator

Indianapolis Towing and Recovery 317-247-8484

Indianapolis Towing and Recovery 317-247-8484

We need to be thankful for tow truck operators. Without their services, there would be a long list of inconveniences and consequences. Tow trucks can provide towing services for stranded vehicles, as well as, illegally parked vehicles. But they also do so much more! When a big tree falls after a big storm and blocks the road, they can clear the way for traffic. If a bus falls into a ditch or pond, they can pull it out. When an airplane needs to be transported, they are the ones for the job. And when someone has a flat tire or locks their keys in the car, they are there too.

So you see, there is more to being a tow truck driver than most would think. In fact, it is a great job for someone who likes to work alone and loves to drive! Not only does it give you an annual income of 25 to 35 thousand dollars, it gives you freedom to work nights, holidays, weekends, and more. Being a tow truck operator is not only a professional job, it is an exciting one. You never know what challenge lays ahead of you day-day-to-day! So if you are considering the idea of becoming a tow truck driver, continue reading to find out how!

Truck Driver Requirements

In order to become a tow truck operator, you must meet certain requirements first. These prerequisites will vary among local jurisdictions, but nonetheless, it is important to be prepared to have them all. For starters, you must be at least 18 years old to become a tow truck driver. You must also have a valid drivers’ license. So if you do not have one already, that will be your first step toward becoming a wrecker operator.

Your driving history will most likely play a role in whether or not you get hired within a towing company. In terms of driving records, there shouldn’t be a need to worry if you only have minor infractions like a speeding ticket or unpaid parking tickets. It is understandable that a towing company wants to hire someone they think is a safe driver.

If you are 18 years old, legally licensed to drive, and retain a decent driving record, then you are ready to get your CDL. This stands for “commercial drivers’ license.” This is a secondary licensed in addition to your primary drivers’ license, and permits you to operate commercial vehicles. This is not always a requirement among towing companies, or local jurisdictions, but it is a wise choice for anyone wishing to join the driving field.

It shows that you took the time to complete a series of accredited training courses to improve your driving skills. This alone increases your chances of being hired at a wrecker company. Also, the U.S. Department of Transportation requires you to have a CDL to operate extra-large trucks and cargoes over 26,000 pounds. So it’s best to go for it! To get self-certified for a CDL in Indiana, click here.

Towing companies will also want to hire those in good physical health, including vision and hearing. Many request a signature from a licensed physician declaring your status of health. And you should expect to have to pass a drug test too.

The last step toward becoming a tow truck driver is to create your resume. Be honest and informative by providing your credentials, past education, work force experience, and goals. Once you do this, you can start applying!

Gooseneck Hitches Versus Fifth Wheel Hitches

Indianapolis Towing and Recovery 317-247-8484

Indianapolis Towing and Recovery 317-247-8484

Sure, you can get by using a Class 1 through 5 receiver for your trailer and light boat towing. But for large loads, horse trailers, and campers, you need a heavy duty hitch. Heavy duty hitches, combined with the proper towing equipment, allow drivers to tow larger freights and pull heavier loads, for a longer amount of time. This is made possible by placing the hitching point in the truck bed over the rear axle. They are strong enough to support more weight compared to a standard bumper hitch.

So overall, they make large towing jobs safer and more efficient. Continue reading to learn the two types of heavy-duty hitch systems, and the difference between them.

Heavy Duty Towing Hitches

There are two kinds of towing hitches used for heavy-duty purposes: 1) gooseneck hitches, and 2) fifth wheel hitches. They both used a different coupler, but there is more that sets them apart than just that. Look below to review some details about each hitch, and how they support heavy-duty tows.

Gooseneck Hitches

These hitches have trailer balls that are similar to standard hitches. However, the trailer ball is mounted in the middle of the truck bed instead of the bumper. Gooseneck hitches can support much more weight, and can carry large recreational vehicles, campers, trailers, and more. In fact, it can support and pull up to 30,000 pounds gross tongue weight (GTW)!

They can also make tighter and narrower turns since their pivot point is more forward. Gooseneck hitches are generally used for trucks with 4-wheel axles in order to sustain the weight. And certain gooseneck hitches can be folded down or easily removed so drivers can have access to their truck bed when they are not towing anything.

Recommended: B&W Turnover Ball Gooseneck Hitch – $439.00

Fifth Wheel Hitches

These heavy duty hitches look much like the ones used on semi-trucks. They are also similar to gooseneck hitches because they also can support and pull a large amount of weight. In fact, they have a high weight capacity of 16,000 to 30,000 pounds GTW. This is because they too have a bed-mounted design. They mount to rails that must be permanently bolted on a truck bed, but can be removed for truck bed access. If you are pulling big campers or vehicle trailers, you will be safer and happier with a fifth wheel hitch. They are easier to maneuver and much more stable for towing heavy loads. Many fifth wheel hitches have a special pivoting design that allows for better shock absorption for bumps and changing road conditions. This gives drivers a smoother towing experience.

Recommended: B&W Companion Fifth Wheel Hitch – $879.00

3 Reasons Why Car Auctions Save You Money

Indianapolis Auto Auctions 317-247-8484

Indianapolis Auto Auctions 317-247-8484

If you need a replacement vehicle fast, but money is tight, a car auction could be the perfect solution to your dilemma. Local auto auctions are the best source for finding a good-quality vehicle, below market prices. In fact, brand new model vehicles can go for as much as $10,000 less than its KKB value, simply because they are auctioned off, rather than sold. You see, at an auto auction, cars are priced extremely low, at base rates. Then once the auction begins, it is up to the consumers to decide how much the vehicle is worth, and how much it sells for. The highest bidder always wins.

For example, a 2005 Chevy Cobalt might start at $2,000, but after a few rounds of bidding back and forth, it sells to the highest bidder for $4,400. Although the price goes up, it is all based on real-time demand. And if no one bids, you get the base asking price! That is the first reason why car auctions save you money. Continue reading to learn the other two!

Auto Auctions are Local

Since vehicles are local and not imported in town from another location, their prices are not inflated to make up for the overhead transportation costs. Dealership vehicles automatically tack on extra dollars for many reasons, and importing is one of them. Skip all the extra costs for things that had nothing to do with you, and choose an auto auction for new and used vehicles. Also, local vehicles are an advantage since you are familiar with the terrain and weather they likely experienced. You wouldn’t want to buy a 4×4 truck from a man in the smoky mountains, since the conditions it experienced on a daily basis were probably harsh and had long-term effects on it. Knowing where your car comes from is an advantage because you know that it was driven locally. This saves you money by ensuring you are buying a quality car in good condition.

Auto Auctions Don’t Pay Staff Commissions

Another reason why dealership prices are so ridiculous is because they must also pay their employees commission. This means negotiating back and forth, which is enough of a hassle, and then paying extra because a salesman wants to profit more from your purchase. A car auction has auctioneers, not car salesmen, and they surely do not work for commission. You are getting a transparent price, with no hidden agendas, when you buy a vehicle from an auto auction.
