10 Electronics You Should Never Plug into a Power Strip

Power strips are highly useful to have on hand. But be sure you never, under any circumstances, plug these 10 electronics into one, or else face some dangerous and costly consequences!

Power Strip Safety 101

Power strips certainly solve the problem of the ever-needed power outlet, but they are not a universal tool. There are plenty of electronics, appliances, devices, and more that should never be used with a power strip.

Here are the top 10 things you should never plug into a power strip:

POWER STRIPS!

Yes, it is true. You should never plug a power strip into another power strip! Known as “daisy chaining”, this bad practice can start a fire, or quickly overload your electrical system. Furthermore, it breaks most building and fire safety codes.

Air Compressors

Air compressors use too much energy, so they are not safe for power strips. They can overload the power strip just by starting it up.

Coffee Machines

Regardless of which kind of coffee maker you own, it should never be plugged into a power strip. Not only can the strip overload, but the coffee machine can also overheat, smoke, or catch fire.

Hair Tools

Everything from flat irons and curling irons, to crimping tools, wands, blow dryers, and more, electronic hair devices are not meant to be plugged into a power cord. They will trip the circuit breaker before you can finish your style.

Microwaves

When it comes to microwaves, it is extremely dangerous to operate one via a power strip. Microwaves use an enormous amount of energy, which will quickly burn out the power strip, and potentially cause a fire.

Portable Heaters and Air Conditioners

Because these portable units are designs to turn on and off on a programed cycle, they tend to use a lot of energy to start up and stay on. For this reason, they are not suitable for power strips.

Refrigerators/Freezers

Like microwaves, refrigerators and freezers are not designed to work on a power strip. They use way too much energy to safely operate on a power strip. Such appliances should always be plugged into a GFCI outlet.

Slow Cookers/Hot Plates

Slow cookers like crockpots, instant pots, and rice cookers are meant to use a lot of heat and energy to cook food. For this reason, they cannot be plugged into a power strip. The same rule applies for hot plates and similar kitchen and catering electronic devices.

Sump Pumps

Sump pumps cannot be plugged into a power strip under any circumstances. They should always be plugged directly into a GFCI outlet. In fact, the GFCI outlet should be positioned slightly above the floor in case of a flood.

Toasters/Toaster Ovens

Like coffee makers, you wouldn’t think a toaster would be incompatible with a power strip, but they are! Toasters are designed to make a lot of heat in a short amount of time; a feat that requires a lot of energy. By now, you know that too much energy will overload a power strip.

Do you have some valuable electronics that are now destroyed because they were burnt to a crisp in a defective power strip or GI outlet? If so, recycle them locally for cash on the spot! Contact Zore’s Indy at 317-247-8484 for profitable electronics recycling in Indianapolis, Indiana. We accept all broken and unusable electronics, including appliances, computers, and mobile phones!

Metal Recycling Basics

Many metals can be recycled over and over again, as mentioned before; however, some metals are not commonly recycled due to their degree of exclusivity.  For example, around-the-corner metal recycling companies aren’t likely to see someone recycling precious metals like gold or silver.  Instead, these types of precious metals are taken to refurbishing shops and manufacturers to be used for jewelry and other equally sophisticated items.

Ferrous and Non Ferrous Metal

Metals that are recycled on a regular basis and commonly seen at a scrap metal yard include ferrous and non-ferrous metals.  Ferrous metal contains iron while nonferrous metals do not. The easiest way to determine whether or not the metal you question is ferrous or nonferrous is by using a magnet.

If the magnet sticks to the metal, then the metal is most likely ferrous. If the magnet does not stick, then the item is a non-ferrous metal.  Non-ferrous metals are worth more money than ferrous metals. Although ferrous metals are not worth much, they are still accepted at scrap metal yards and can be recycled for good use.

Most Common Ferrous Metals:

☑ Stainless Steel
☑ Iron
☑ Carbon Steel
☑ Mild Steel
☑ Cast/Wrought Iron
☑ Iron

Most Common Non-Ferrous Metals:

☑ Copper
☑ Aluminum
☑ Brass
☑ Lead
☑ Tin
☑ Titanium
☑ Zinc
☑ Nickel

Common Non-Ferrous Precious Metals:

☑ Gold
☑ Silver
☑ Platinum

These metals and any commodity that contains traces of these metals can be recycled and reused over and over again.  Metal recycling is a fantastic way to preserve our natural resources and surrounding environment.  Also, most scrap metal companies offer cash for recyclable metal.  The value of the metal generally determines the amount of money a person can earn from recycling ferrous and nonferrous metals.  Also, the weight and bulk of the metal contributes to the monetary return.

What Will Happen to My Junk Car After I Sell It?

Sometimes knowing what’s on the other side of a decision can help you make it. When it comes to selling your junk car or keeping it, you might be better swayed into an easy profit by learning just what will become of your junk car after you sell it to a local auto salvage yard or junk car buyer.

Continue reading, in fact, to learn the typical after-life of a junk car, and why you should sell yours ASAP.

Most of Your Junk Car Will Be Recycled

The auto recycling industry reports that an average of 85% of a junked car is recycled and repurposed. No other consumer product is recycled and reused more than vehicles. Now that in itself is a good enough reason to sell your junk car. You would literally be contributing to the betterment of our planet by helping preserve our natural resources, reduce air pollution, and create jobs all around the world.

Junk Car Parts are Also Reused or Refurbished

Many junk cars, probably even your own, still have many working or reusable parts that can be refurbished and put in another car. Common reusable automotive parts include engines, transmissions, alternators, starters, headlights, taillights, fenders, bumpers, windshields, and water pumps. In addition to parts, most auto salvage workers also remove all liquids and fluids from a junk car, and place them for reuse if possible, such as gasoline, motor oil, and coolant.

Scrap Metal Recycling

Once all reusable parts and fluids are removed, all that’s usually left is generally metal. This metal is cleaned, sorted, shredded, and then melted down in bars, or sometimes other shapes, for future distribution. Common industries that use this recycled scrap metal include the construction and building industry, automotive manufacturing, food processing, and more. Parts that are not metal can also be reused, such as tires, which are shredded and repurposed as asphalt, tarmacs, playground aggregate, and mulch.

Where to Find an Auto Part Number

Do you need a replacement catalytic converter or muffler, but have no clue where to find the auto part number for it? Well, you will be happy to learn that there are many ways to locate the auto part identification number for your specific vehicle, and they are all pretty simple! Continue below to find out how.

OEM Auto Parts and Used Auto Parts 317-244-0700
OEM Auto Parts and Used Auto Parts 317-244-0700

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

Do you know your car’s VIN? This is known as a vehicle identification number, and if you have it, you can find any auto part you need. It is basically your car’s genetic code. Not only does the VIN confirm the exact make and model vehicle you have, but it also provides critical information about the specific car engine. Locating your vehicle identification number (VIN) is the first place to start when you need an auto part number, regardless of which part you need.

Your VIN will verify all auto part compatibility with your vehicle. Generally, you can find your vehicle identification number on the inside of the door jam on the driver’s side. It appears as a series of 17 digits, both letters and numbers. The digits represent the country of the auto manufacturer, vehicle type, vehicle details, check digit, year, assembly plant, and production number. That’s right; a VIN can reveal all of this information and more, just like human DNA!

If You Do Not Know Your VIN

Locate your owners’ manual if you can, and confirm your car’s make, model, and year. Then learn your engine size. Not all vehicles that match your car have the same engine, so this is a critical piece of information when looking for replacement auto parts. Take this information and give it to your Indianapolis auto parts dealer, and they will be able to find the proper parts for your car. Also, a mechanic can hook up their laptop to your vehicle’s onboard computer to get the VIN, but this is usually not free.

OEM and Aftermarket Car Parts

When you are replacing a car part for your vehicle, you will have the option of choosing between an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) part, or an aftermarket car part. Oppositely, aftermarket car parts are compatible with your car, but manufactured by a third-party auto parts maker. OEM parts are the exact parts used when your car was assembled, while aftermarket ones are separate, but compatible. Although aftermarket parts are cheaper, OEM are always encouraged for optimal vehicular performance.

How to Find New or Used Car Parts

► First locate your vehicle identification number (VIN).

► Get in touch with an Indianapolis auto parts store.

► Choose between new parts, used parts, or refurbished car parts.

► Compare prices to nearby auto part retailers.

► Move forward with your top choice!

Recognized Noble Metals and Their Unique Properties

You have likely heard of precious metals, which are rare, naturally-occurring elements with high economic value. But you might not have heard about noble metals, which are arguably quite similar to precious metals in terms of value, composition, and uses. Continue reading to learn some interesting facts about noble metals, including some universally-recognized noble metals and their unique properties.

Indianapolis Indiana Metal Recycling
Indianapolis Indiana Metal Recycling 317-247-8484

Definition of a Noble Metal

A noble metal is a metal belonging to a group of metals that are resistant to corrosion and rust (oxidation) in moist climates or conditions. Different to their opposites, base metals, noble metals cannot be affected by acids, nor exposure to moist air. The metal exception is copper, which although is corrosion-resistant, is not considered a noble metal unless you go by the strict definition of a noble metal, which is any metal that has a filled electron d-band.

Types of Noble Metals

As mentioned, copper is often excluded from the recognized list of noble metals, but other metal groups are not, including platinum, rhodium, ruthenium, palladium, iridium, and osmium. Additional metals that are recognized as noble are gold and silver. It is sometimes suggested that rhenium and mercury fit the definition of being a noble metal since they retain anti-corrosive properties like the others. However, the real grouping of noble metals is still cloudy to this day. For instance, anti-corrosive metals like tantalum, titanium, and niobium are not considered noble, even though they match the standard definition of one.

Noble Metal Applications

Because noble metals are resistant to acid attacks, oxidation, and corrosion, they are widely used in several applications all across the world. The most common uses for noble metals include jewelry, coinage, dentistry, surgical instruments, galvanization, electrical workings, and machine parts. They are also sometimes used as catalysts in the automotive and chemical industries for spark plugs, electrodes, and more. As you might surmise, commodities made with noble metals are generally higher in value, and therefore, in price.

Some precious metals are noble, and some are not. Often times, precious metals and noble metals are terms used interchangeably.
